star lover
Bring back blogs. Last year was the year of journaling, this year is the year of blogging, solely because crocheting + writing with a pen in a journal is a lethal combo that will inevitably lead to premature carpal tunnel. Plus, I type faster anyways.
Today’s topic is the absolutely amazing star top I made recently. Fun fact about me (Tyler), A star in any form is my favorite shape.
When I was younger I used to have these glow-in-the-dark star shaped stickers that my sister and I would stick on the walls of our bedroom. On nights when I couldn’t fall asleep I would just stare at them until I eventually knocked out. Okkkkk nostalgia… why I am I feeling so sentimental right now. Stars are just cool man. The shape- not the scientific part of it- is cool, I like it as a motif in my art and I think it’s pretty versatile. Another fun fact: my tragus piercing (although my most painful) is my favorite piercing. I actually have a star shaped stud on it and that’s quite literally the only reason why it’s my favorite. Runner up would probably be my conch (the jewelry is a 8 pointed star, see a pattern here).
Over the past couple of years I’ve developed a style that I think is fairly basic… I try and focus on getting clothes that fit me well, and I do love having a variety of colors to choose from. Been having a moment of reflection recently and have started to consider how much money I spend on clothing, versus what am I actually wearing. Because of this, a lot more of my projects as of recent have been geared towards the initiative of building long lasting statement pieces that I could add to my daily wardrobe. I unfortunately fell victim to the real pandemic of the 2020s- excessive spending and unnecessary purchases (more specifically in my case) at the thrift. Because of that, I spent the majority of 2024 endlessly sifting through my clothes and discarding them based on how often I wear certain pieces (though now that I think about it, I still have yet to donate them… probably because I harbor a lot of guilt for contributing to the large influx of donations thrift stores are already being flooded with nowadays). Now, I am ready to rebuild my closet with timeless pieces.
Right now I’m currently in a blue era. Got some blue going on… those who are chronically online will get what I am referencing, I apologize to anyone who understood that. I also am a big fan of combining minimalism with big, yet subtle statements. Now I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but if you look at the final product, you’ll understand what I mean. Kind of coincides with the idea that I’m trying to build a cohesive, timeless wardrobe. The whole concept for this top was essentially a loose knit tank in the front, with a giant star on the back. I got a small cake of this light blue yarn from a basket I found at an estate sale, and it paired perfectly with this multicolored black and blue yarn I got from a really underground, small store (Daiso).
Honestly, not too bad for a freehanded first attempt. I would totally write a pattern for this again but in all honesty, I kind of forgot how I even started making this in the first place. However, I think it looks great- it’s exactly what I had envisioned. This is kind of the elevated successor to the purple star top that I made for the runway a couple months prior (viewable in my look book), except the pointed 5th tip of the star is facing up instead of down. I’m definitely going to reserve this top for music festivals and concerts, or even as a layering piece for the holidays.
More of this on my Instagram, I documented the whole process.
